The Elephant Affect
My Story
Years ago, I took a two week trip to Thailand. It was so full of beautiful experiences and I loved every minute of it. With everything that I experienced, my encounter with the elephants would be the answer to my long, awaited, prayer. The day finally came to ride the elephant. As I walked up to this beautiful, majestic creature to take a picture, I was full of fear and anxiety because I was thinking that she was so big that at, any time, she could crush me and destroy everything in her path. It's said that even if we don't physically show fear, animals have a sense and can pick up on it. I knew this elephant could sense it but regardless, she stood there tall, and lightly brushed up against me as if to reassure me in an unspoken way, yeah, I could crush you but that's not me. Relax.
When it came time to take a ride, I was a little more relaxed but the fear was still there. You don't know how high up an elephant is until you are sitting on one. I had prepared myself for a bumpy, unstable ride as I gripped the small, thin railing bench on its back. There really wasn't any protection and I was thinking how this elephant ride could go wrong in so many different ways. To my surprise, she moved with such grace, taking her time, not rushing. There was an elegance about her, such a quiet, gentle peace. It was a type of peace that was so quiet, yet so loud. That's the best way I can explain it. It was as if she knew who she was and was unbothered by anything else. When it came time for us to cross through the water, I was struck with a whole new level of fear as I gripped the railing tighter. We approached the lake where nothing but jagged rocks leading down into the water; My heart started beating faster as I said 100 prayers a minute. As the elephant stepped on the rocks while entering the water, she carefully placed one foot down making sure not to move forward until each foot was securely stable before taking another step at the same time having to balance me, my friend, and the guide on her back. It was as if she was being careful to make sure she was ok and that we were ok at the same time. It was an amazing experience. By the time the ride was over I WAS IN LOVE! Not only with this beautiful creature but with her essence.
When I got back to the U. S. I could not get enough of learning more about elephants. I was in awe. The more I learned, the more respect I had and the deeper I fell in love. The female elephant stands as the true ruler of the jungle, embodying power, grace, and wisdom. Community is at the heart of her existence, as she leads her family with deep care, compassion, and patience. Majestic and powerful, she possesses the strength to destroy anything in her path, yet she chooses to be gentle, humble, and loving. She is the unwavering protector of her tribe, standing fearless against threats and guiding her herd with resilience and purpose. It takes much to rattle her calm demeanor, but her gentleness should never be mistaken for weakness—those who challenge her quickly learn not to test her resolve. Confident in who she is, she never feels diminished by the lion's title as "king of the jungle," for she knows her worth and remains authentically herself. She respects the wisdom of older, more experienced females, patiently learning until her time comes to lead, embracing the journey with grace. Outliving the lion by decades, often reaching 70 or 80 years, she commands the respect of every creature in the jungle—including the lion himself. Her quiet power and steadfast nature make her the undisputed monarch of the wild.
So, here I am, 10 years of having a seed in my heart and now an answered prayer, with direction from God to build a transformative online community designed to empower women by providing essential resources, unwavering support, and tailored education. Inspired by the resilience, strength, and nurturing spirit of the female elephant, My Sister's Keep-Her is a community-driven space where women can connect, grow, and thrive.
This site embodies the characteristics of the female elephant—compassionate, patient, and empowered. It nurtures women through their journey, providing a safe, inclusive space for growth while fostering the resilience and confidence needed to lead with purpose and grace.
